FACTS ABOUT BUTTERFLIES
Butterflies are insects.
A butterfly's life cycle is made up of four parts, egg, larva (caterpillars), pupa (chrysalis) and adult (butterfly).
Most caterpillars are herbivores or plant eaters.
Fully grown caterpillars attached themselves to a suitable twig or leaf before shedding their outside layer of skin to reveal a hard skin underneath known as chrysalis.
An adult butterfly will eventually emerge from the chrysalis where it will wait for a few hours for it wings to fill with blood and dry before flying for the first time.
Butterflies can live in the adult stage from anywhere between a week and a year depending on the species.
Butterflies have four wings.
Butterflies often have brightly colored wings with unique patterns made up of tiny scales.
Most butterflies feed on nectar from flowers.
Butterflies have taste receptors on their feet.
Scientists estimated that there are between 15,000 and 20,000 different species of butterfly.

STAGE 1: EGGS

In the first stage a girl butterfly lays eggs. A butterfly first starts out as an egg. A girl butterfly lays the egg on a leaf. She lays the eggs really close together. The eggs are small and round. About five day after the eggs are laid, a tiny worm-like creature will hatch from the egg.

STAGE 2: LARVA ( CATERPILLAR)

A very tiny caterpillar hatches from the egg. The first meal for most caterpillars is the eggshell. The caterpillar is designed to be an " eating machine" and before it begins to pupate it will increase its body mass thousands of times.
It is believe that the caterpillar stage is the most dangerous in the life cycle of a butterfly as the mortality rates are very high. Caterpillars are subject to weather conditions, disease, parasites and predators. Many adult butterfly species lay hundreds of eggs with only few surviving to become adults.
STAGE 3: PUPA (CHRYSALIS)

Once fully grown, the caterpillar forms into a "pupa" (or chrysalis)" - a kind of vessel in which the caterpillar changes into a butterfly. They usually do this in twigs or safe, hidden areas around the host plant. The pupa stage may last a few weeks to several months depending on the species. During this time, a hardened case forms around the pupa to protect it from predators and extreme weather conditions. And inside, the tissue, limbs and organs of the caterpillar transform. The result? A wonderful winged butterfly!

STAGE 4: BUTTERFLY
Once the butterfly is ready to merge, the case around the pupa splits open. Bute it's not time for take off just yet, as the wings are at first wet, soft and wrinkled against its body. The butterfly waits for its wings to dry, and pump a liquid called hemolymph into them so that they become big and strong. Once fit for flight, this brilliant bug then takes to the air in search for flowers to feed in and for butterflies to mate with. An that's the cycle complete -and ready to start all over again!
