SHAPE EQUAL AND UNEQUAL PARTS
EQUAL OR UNEQUAL SHARING OF A WHOLE
FLASHCARDS/ GAME CARDS
As a basic introduction to fractions, use this helpful resource to introduce the concept of shapes being broken into equal and unequal parts.
Students need to understand the difference between equal and unequal parts before they can identify and name fractional parts. As students, learn words to describe equal parts of a whole, they need to recognize when parts of a whole are not equal.
Students will generally assume equal parts must be congruent, or the same shape and size. Actually, equal parts must be the same size, but can be different shapes.
A real-life situation for this concept is sharing food. Pizzas are cut into equal parts so that everyone can have the same size of slice. Often, when slices of a cake are being served, some people ask for a smaller or a larger slice, which results in unequal shares. Deciding whether a shape (or a whole) has been partitioned into equal or unequal parts is the beginning of children's experience with fractions.
